How Custom Industrial Bulk Storage Tanks Are Fabricated

Industrial bulk storage tanks come in all shapes and sizes. When you need one that has to meet industry or site-specific requirements, it’s best to go the route of custom fabrication.

Sourcing a custom-fabricated industrial bulk storage tank requires more effort than buying an “off-the-shelf” product, but it guarantees an exceptional result if you work with the right custom metal fabricator. Moreover, if they are experienced and service oriented, they’ll be able to guide you through the process and make it as easy as possible.

Here’s a presentation we put together on how we approach custom industrial bulk storage tank fabrication here at Southern Metal Fabricators.

In general, we follow a six-step process:

  1. The project is given a classification (e.g., ASME Sec. IV, Atmospheric, Certified, Code, Non-Code)
  2. Approval drawings are then processed through the fabricator’s engineering department and presented for customer review.
  3. Once drawings are approved, the production schedule is confirmed.
  4. Production proceeds with plate-forming, fit-up, and certified weld-out to customer requirements.
  5. Following production, the finishing process is completed and in-house QC inspectors ensure quality production and specification compliance.
  6. Final customer or third-party inspections check quality and then the product is prepared for shipping.

Obviously, each project is individual and has its own particulars, but that’s generally how we approach custom fabrication for industrial bulk storage tanks, whether they are made from aluminum, carbon steel, or stainless steel, and used to store everything from plastic pellets to fertilizer.

We’ve done it all, as you can see by browsing our portfolio of custom bulk storage bins, hoppers, silos, and tanks.

We hope this presentation has helped you get your head around the custom fabrication process for industrial bulk storage tanks.
