Molasses is one of the more demanding bulk liquids to store at industrial scale. It's extremely viscous and corrosive to poorly protected steel. It’s also very heavy, exerting significant hydrostatic pressure on tank walls and welds. A faulty silo can mean downtime and also can be a serious safety and environmental hazard.
For this project, Southern Metal Fabricators fabricated four carbon steel molasses silos with connecting platforms for a client in Shelbyville, Tenn. Each silo was 13 feet in outer diameter and 58 feet tall overall. We met directly with the customer during the design process to ensure every specification was captured before fabrication began.
Every weld was inspected throughout fabrication, not just at completion. The finished silos were sand blasted and painted for long-term corrosion protection before delivery.
